Spatial mobility of population: an inter-district study of Rajasthan

This study attempts to determine the forces that affect inter-district migration in Rajasthan, India, using 1971 and 1981 decadal census data as a basic source. The study is based on the ratios of several independent variables which emphasize the relative strength of pull and push forces. Multivariate step regression analysis is used to test the view that migration is a rational economic phenomenon. However, the influence of geo-physical and traditional factors such as distance and stock of migrants, is dominant in determining the quantity and direction of migration. The overall level of economic development in the state is still very low. Only when substantial agricultural and industrial development is achieved, creating increased opportunities, will economic factors become significant in influencing migration.
