Changes in socio-economic parameters as an impact of canal irrigation in the Ganganagar district arid zone of Rajasthan [India] were discussed. Based on socio-economic and historical evidence the findings prior to (1910-1921) and after irrigation (1927-1975) supported the hypothesis set up on population changes, land use attributes and agriculture development. Irrigation brought immigration, resulting in a tremendous increase of population (1874%) and density (1720% persons/km2) in the Gang Canal area during 1921-71. Human settlements increased from 231 in 1921 to 1533 in 1975.
