Economic value of farm women's unpaid work in rural areas of arid Rajasthan

The study was conducted in Madhopura and Bhidkali villages of Jodhpur district, Rajasthan, India. The work hours of women of the land owner, agricultural labourer and share cropper classes were estimated. It was found that women have to work for 15-19 hrs per day during the farming season as compared to 12-16 hrs per day during the slack season. The economic value of women's work was estimated up to Rs. 40 560 per year. The energy spent by agricultural labour was up to 3273 kcal per day during the farming season. A significant difference was found in household work (r=0.962), field work (r=0.993) and rest hours (r=0.998) during both seasons. A significant difference was also found in energy expenditure in various activities during the farming and slack seasons. The economic compensation for work overload was estimated between Rs. 23 760 and 29 310 per year.
