Experimental infection of turkeys, chickens, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, pheasants and pigeons with turkey rhinotracheitis virus

Seven avian species including 20 three-week-old specific pathogen-free chickens, 20 four-week-old turkeys, 10 three-day-old Pekin ducklings, 10 five-day-old goslings, 18 two-week-old pheasants, 20 three-week-old guinea fowl and 10 adult pigeons, were infected by intranasal instillation of the CVL 14/1 strain of turkey rhinotracheitis (TRT) virus. Mild clinical signs including nasal discharge, sneezing and submandibular oedema were seen in the turkeys and a slight conjunctivitis in some pheasants. Low levels of TRT antibodies were seen in the turkeys, chickens, pheasants and guinea fowl, but there were no obvious clinical signs in the chickens, pheasants and guinea fowl. The ducks, geese and pigeons showed no clinical signs and no TRT antibodies were detected. TRT virus was re-isolated from upper respiratory tract swabs from turkeys and chickens but not from cloacal swabs.
