One-day-old chicks were inoculated intra-abdominally with 0.2 ml Marek's disease virus (MDV) strain HPRS 16 in whole blood, or intramuscularly with 0.2 ml cell-associated (duck embryo fibroblasts) turkey herpesvirus (HTV) strain Ng1 at 1000-40 000 plaque forming units per dose. Batches of 4-7 chicks were killed after 4-84 days and livers examined histologically and histometrically for foci of lymphocytes, prolymphocytes, reticulum cells and lymphoblasts. Chicks inoculated with MDV showed after 10-30 days proliferation of lymphatic foci in the liver, followed by regression 30 to 42 days after inoculation. Chicks given different doses of cell-associated HTV developed after 7-14 days slight proliferation of reticulocytes recorded histometrically, which was considerably less than in the MDV-infected chicks.
