The mosquito population on a site of temporary shelters used by construction workers in Calcutta, India, was sampled for one year (September 1985 to August 1986). Of the 17 109 individuals of 8 species captured, 94% were Culex quinquefasciatus and 2.1% were Anopheles stephensi. The other species included Aedes aegypti, Anopheles vagus, A. subpictus, Armigeres subalbatus, Culex gelidus and C. bitaeniorhynchus. Of the 516 female anopheline mosquitoes, 69.1% were A. stephensi. Numbers of A. stephensi reached a peak in July, when sporozoites of Plasmodium were isolated from one female. Very few individuals were caught from December to April. The maximum number of individuals of A. stephensi recorded from a shelter per year was 0-72. The resting places of this species are listed.
