In Calcutta, 1228 female anophelines were collected by means of human baited night catches (at 18.00-04.00 h) but only 6 from resting sites in January-October 1986; of these, 56.5% were A. stephensi, 40.9% A. subpictus and 2.6% A. vagus. Out of 982 of these anophelines dissected, sporozoites were found (in September) in 1 female of A. stephensi. This confirms both old and recent findings implicating this species as a malaria vector in Calcutta. The scale of the current problem is indicated by the fact that of 59 592 potential larval sites checked, 10 592, including masonry tanks, cisterns, low-lying land, water collections in buildings, tyres, borrow pits, ditches, ponds, empty artificial containers, depressions, shallow wells, pits, drains, 'nullahs' and canals, were found positive for mosquito breeding.
