Incrimination of Anopheles vagus Donitz, 1902 as an epidemic malaria vector in Bangladesh

In a recent outbreak of malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax in Bangladesh, the usual vector in this part of the country, Anopheles philippinensis, was absent, and 2 other vectors, A. aconitus and A. annularis were only found in very low numbers. The most abundant species of mosquito caught was the usually zoophilic, exophilic and exophagic species A. vagus, of which 1.6% were found to be positive for malaria sporozoites in the salivary glands. The possible reasons for the change in the malarial vector in this area are discussed.
