Further studies on the phosphoglucomutase gene in Anopheles stephensi: evidence for a fourth allele (Diptera, Culicidae)

A previous study of the phosphoglucomutase (PGM) variants in Anopheles stephensi List., made on laboratory populations originating in Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and India, demonstrated the existence in this species of an autosomal locus (Pgm) with three co-dominant alleles, PgmA, PgmB and PgmC, which were variously distributed in the four strains. The Iraq strain showed all the alleles, the strains from Karachi and India only PgmA and PgmB and the Iran strain only PgmA and PgmC.In the present paper, the existence of a fourth co-dominant Pgm allele (PgmD) in A. stephensi is recorded. It was found in a second sample of the Iran strain. The distribution of the six PGM phenotypes (A, AC, C, AD, CD and D) in the Iran strain was studied in a sample of 141 adult mosquitos. The findings indicated the existence of three co-dominant alleles, which was confirmed in a series of experimental crosses and back-crosses.
