Enhancement of Japanese encephalitis virus growth in vitro by concanavalin A

Treatment of monolayers of porcine kidney (PS) cells with concanavalin A (Con A) prior to infection with Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus led to about 4-5 times enhancement of the growth of virus. Higher titres of JE virus were obtained 18-24 h post inoculation in culture treated with Con A compared to controls. Con A did not affect the plaque forming ability of West Nile (WN) and dengue viruses. The enhancement of JE virus growth may be of practical value for isolation of the virus from clinical specimens when it is present in low titres.
