Seroprevalence of Japanese encephalitis virus infection in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

A study was conducted at the Virology section of the Post Graduate Department of Microbiology, King George's Medical University, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India during March-June 2005. A total of 57 consecutive cases (35 children and 18 adults; 43 males and 14 females) suspected of having acute encephalitis were included in the study. Blood samples were obtained on admission and 8 days later; these were subjected to haemagglutination inhibition tests. Paired sera could only be collected in 13 cases. Of the 13 paired samples, 7 were positive for Japanese encephalitis virus. Of the 57 cases, 16 (28.07%; 10 males and 6 females) were positive for Japanese encephalitis virus antibodies.
