Transovarial transmission of Japanese encephalitis virus in Culex bitaeniorhynchus mosquitoes

Laboratory studies in India showed that Japanese encephalitis virus can be transmitted transovarially in Culex bitaeniorhynchus. In 1 set of experiments, females were infected with the virus by intrathoracic inoculation. Use of the mosquito inoculation and fluorescent antibody technique on adults of the F1 generation showed that transovarial transmission had occurred. In a 2nd set of experiments, females were infected by the oral route by feeding them on viraemic chicks. The F1 adults resulting from the 2nd gonotrophic cycle from 32 infected parent females were reared separately and tested for the presence of the virus; transovarial transmission had occurred in 7 instances.
