Antibody dependent plaque enhancement by monoclonal antibodies against Japanese encephalitis virus

Antibody mediated plaque enhancement (ADPE) has been demonstrated in P388D1 (mouse macrophage) cells for Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus using 16 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) raised against an Indian strain of JE virus. The enhancing ability was solely exhibited by the haemagglutination inhibition (HI) positive flavivirus cross-reacting MAbs. The HI positive, JE virus strain specific or non-HI MAbs showed no such activity. The ADPE titers of the MAbs against JE and West Nile (WN) viruses were equivalent. In view of the fact that flaviviral infections are a common occurrence in the Indian subcontinent, these findings acquired significance.
