Properties and antigenic characteristics of tick-borne encephalitis virus strains isolated from various biological objects in their natural foci in the southern Far East were studied using 4 clones of monoclonal antibodies. Tick-borne encephalitis virus strains were isolated from Ixodes persulcatus, Haemaphysalis concinna, H. japonica, Dermacentor silvarum, H. longicornis, I. nipponensis, the large Japanese and striped field mice, the reed and common red-backed voles, Naumann's thrush, and the blood and brain tissue of humans. Comparative characteristics of the viral strains with respect to the rate and degree of antigen-antibody neutral complex formation were studied using the kinetic hemagglutination inhibition test with polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies. The study showed that it is not only possible to study antigenic characteristics using monoclonal antibodies, but also to select tick-borne encephalitis virus strains simultaneously based on their degree of avidity to all four clones.
