Serological examinations and questioning of 1928 subjects were carried out in 22 villages of forest-steppe districts on the left bank of the Volga, 525 subjects in 6 villages of Samara Bend (Zhiguli) and 352 subjects in the town of Zhigulevsk [USSR]. The immune portion of tick-borne encephalitis virus and contacts with ticks were 14.2 and 11.1% in forest-steppe districts on the left bank of the Volga, 19.8 and 22.7% in villages of Samara Bend and 3.7 and 7.7% in Zhigulevsk. The peculiar feature of latent immunization of the population in the survey area is a very low involvement of younger age groups and comparatively high immune portion among subjects over 50. In villages on the left bank of the Volga the immune portion varied from 1.0-47.9%, the highest levels being found in villiages adjoining linden-aspen forests, the lowest in those near oak forests.
