Effect of high fat diet on the levels of biogenic monoamines and dopamine .beta.-hydroxylase (DBH) activity was studied in serum and tissues of rhesus monkeys. In serum, a marked reduction was observed in the levels of catecholamines, serotonin, histamine and DBH activity. Brain levels of norepinephrine and dopamine were decreased significantly along with DBH activity with almost no change in epinephrine levels. In the heart, the levels of all catecholamines were declined with inhibition of DBH activity. Apparently accumulation of fat in serum and tissues causes alteration of neurotransmitter levels and their biosynthesis.
