Effect of chloroquine treatment on complement levels in Plasmodium knowlesi infected Rhesus monkeys

C3 and CH50 levels in Rhesus monkeys have been estimated during acute Plasmodium knowlesi infection in Rhesus monkeys and following treatment with chloroquine at different levels of parasitaemia. The depletion in C3 and CH50 levels correlated with the level of parasitaemia. The chloroquine treatment reversed the trend in animals treated at less than 30 percent of parasitaemia and there was recovery in the level of C3 and CH50 by the 9th post-drug-administration day. The probable mechanism of reversibility by chloroquine in their levels in infected and treated animals is discussed.
