Serum cholesterol and high density lipoprotein cholesterol in Nigerian diabetics

Nigerian adult diabetics, irrespective of type of treatment, had significantly higher serum total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol values than healthy age-matched adults: 37 male diabetics had serum cholesterol 6.2 +or- 2.1 and HDL cholesterol 1.4 +or- 0.5 mmol/litre, 38 healthy men had 3.9 +or- 1.0 and 0.9 +or- 0.3, 33 female diabetics had 6.9 +or- 1.9 and 1.7 +or- 0.7, and 34 healthy women had 4.8 +or- 1.0 and 1.2 +or- 0.3 mmol/litre. High HDL cholesterol values were correlated with low incidence of coronary heart disease and were considered to be possibly due to moderate alcohol intake and the low saturated fat and high fibre content of the Nigerian diabetic diet.
