Effect of testosterone propionate on electrical activity of brain in intact & gonadectomized rhesus monkeys

The EEG activity of the hypothalamic and limbic system was recorded in rhesus monkeys [Macaca mulatta] and the effect of testosterone proprionate (TP) was observed. The procedure was repeated after gonadectomy. Initially, slow waves appeared in anterior hypothalamic areas and with continued injections, posterior hypothalamus and mamillary body also showed slowing. Later, slowing in the form of synchronized slow waves was also produced from other areas of the limbic system, the maximum effect being observed from amygdala and hippocampus and minimum from posterior cingulate gyrus. On withdrawal of TP, EEG activity reverted to preinjection type by about the 3rd or 4th day. Similar changes appeared after gonadectomy, with the exception that they had occurred earlier and were more marked. The ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus was the only exception, and produced EEG desynchronization or arousal.
