Effect of massive doses of vitamin D2 on glycosaminoglycan levels of aorta in normal and high fat-cholesterol diet fed rats

Rats in 4 groups were given for 3 weeks a normal diet or one containing 15% hydrogenated groundnut oil and 5% cholesterol either alone or supplemented with 12 000 IU ergocalciferol/100 g bodyweight. Those given ergocalciferol had in serum, liver and aorta increased contents of cholesterol, phospholipid and triglyceride, in aorta less hyaluronic acid, heparan sulphate, chondroitin sulphates and heparin and in aorta, liver and heart, decreased lipoprotein lipase activity. Differences were greater in rats given the diet rich in cholesterol.
