Young calves were fed for 8 weeks on a diet of whole milk with cholesterol at 25, 100, 175 or 250 mg/kg bodyweight. Half of the calves of each dietary group were also given a dry starter diet. All received a vitamin and mineral supplement. Plasma cholesterol of the calves getting 25 mg cholesterol with milk levelled off at about 150 mg/100 ml, that of the others at 250, with no significant difference among the 3 groups getting 100 to 250 mg cholesterol. Absorption of cholesterol was greatest with 100 mg cholesterol in the diet to give a cholesterol:fat ratio of about 1:31. Plasma cholesterol with the diet with 25 mg cholesterol and the starter was similar to that of the same group not given starter. Higher cholesterol intake by calves on milk and starter caused no additional rise in plasma cholesterol; maximum absorption was reached at a dietary cholesterol:fat ratio of 1:95. After removal of cholesterol from the diet with only starter given, cholesterol concentrations in plasma declined rapidly to 100 mg/100 ml.
