Rats fed high carbohydrate, high protein or high fat diet showed decrease in HDL (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol and increase in LDL (low density lipoprotein) + VLDL (very low density lipoprotein) cholesterol. Low protein diet or fat free diet increased HDL cholesterol. The former also increased LDL + VLDL cholesterol while the latter did not. Regarding the effect of degree of unsaturation, both coconut oil and groundnut oil produced similar levels of HDL cholesterol, while the latter produced lower levels of LDL + VLDL cholesterol. Saffola oil caused lower levels of HDL as well as VLDL + LDL cholesterol. Both high protein and high carbohydrate diet decreased adipose tissue LPL (lipoprotein lipase) activity in the fed condition. High fat diet increased LPL activity in the adipose tissue. There was no significant difference in the adipose tissue LPL activity in rats fed groundnut oil or coconut oil, while saffola oil showed higher values. Diet rich in carbohydrate, protein or fat showed decreased fecal excretion of sterols and bile acids. Fecal excretion of sterols and bile acids was lower in the case of coconut oil and higher in the case of saffola oil.
