The oviduct, uterus, cervix and the vagina of immature female rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) were found to exhibit phosphorylase, glucokinase, aldolase and lactate dehydrogenase activities. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity could not be detected. Ovariectomy depressed phosphorylase in the oviduct and uterus (lateral region) and aldolase in the oviduct only without affecting the status of other enzymes. Estradiol dipropionate enhanced the activities of all the enzymes except glucokinase which was reduced. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity became detectable. Progesterone either alone or in combination with estrogen evoked variable effects. The findings indicate that Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway of carbohydrate metabolism appears functional in the genital organs of immature female monkeys. The differential behaviour of various enzymes after ovariectomy, estrogen and/or progesterone treatments has been discussed.
