Genetics of abnormal abdomen in Culex pipiens fatigans

A new mutant, called abnormal abdomen, was isolated from a laboratory-reared homozygous strain of Culex quinquefasciatus Say (pipiens fatigans Wied.) in studies in India. Affected individuals had unequally formed abdominal segments. Further examination indicated that the mutation was caused by a monofactorial autosomal recessive gene (ab), which was associated with reduced fertility and high mortality during emergence.
