Microsporidioses of Culex pipiens L. mosquitoes

Two species of Microsporidia were found in 1968 in various developmental stages of Culex pipiens L. in the Moscow area of the USSR. One, a species of Thelohania, causes disease in the preimaginal stages and in adults in early spring, and the other, Weiseria spinosa, cited as a new species, is the causal agent of an epizootic that develops in larvae, pupae and adults in late summer and early autumn. It was found that up to 93.4% of larvae and 27.5% of pupae of C. pipiens were infected, but spores of the parasites were found only occasionally in adults.
