Experience in eradication and preventive measures against the breeding of blood-sucking Culex pipiens L. mosquitoes in the pickling pits of a vegetable depot in Samarkand

In Samarkand, USSR, Culex pipiens L. was found breeding in vegetable pickling vats in semibasement premises of a pickling department at densities of 15-30 to 400-500 m2. The physical and chemical characteristics of the habitat are described. In summer, both C. molestus Forsk. (pipiens molestus) and C. p. pipiens were breeding there, the latter being dominant. The vats could not be emptied, but the premises (including the external surface of the pickling vats) were sprayed against adult mosquitoes and the surface of the water in the vats was treated against larvae for 1.5 months up to the beginning of the pickling season, the insecticide being a 1% solution of trichlorphon (chlorophos) applied at a dosage of 1.2 g a.i./m2. No mosquitoes were seen for 2 days after spraying, but a few egg-rafts were found on the 3rd day, and larvae subsequently developed from them. Wooden vats containing water can be covered with wire gauze or cloth on frames to exclude adult mosquitoes, and a sheet of polyethylene can be laid on the surface of the water, leaving no air bubbles or clearance between the sheet and the walls of the vat, to prevent larval development.
