A method of sterilising males by contact with filter paper impregnated with the chemosterilant thiotepa was developed using males of Aedes aegypti (L.), Anopheles atroparvus Van Thiel (labranchiae atroparvus) and Culex pipiens molestus Forsk. In males of Aedes aegypti, the required level of sterility (over 95%) was obtained by keeping them for 15-30 min or 1 h on paper treated with thiotepa at rates of 440 or 55 mg/m2, respectively. The 30-min exposure to a dosage of 440 mg/m2 caused up to 10% higher mortality in the treated insects than in the controls. Males of Anopheles atroparvus and C. p. molestus were less sensitive to the effect of the chemosterilant, and a sterility rate near 100% was obtained only after 2 hours' contact with a surface impregnated at a dosage of 220 mg/m2. Such treatment caused relatively high mortality of males, reaching 27.5% in A. atroparvus.
