The actual fertility of A. vexans mosquitoes was studied in 1970-1971 in the Astrakhan preserve (the Volga delta) [Russian SFSR, USSR]. The fertility of females collected from natural shelters with mature eggs was higher than in those which had a bloodmeal. They also developed and laid eggs under less favorable conditions in the laboratory. The increasing fertility of A. vexans females with their physiological age was observed. As the egg tubules with follicles developed to phases I-II and II and fat reserves increased, the actual fertility of females in subsequent gonotrophic cycles became greater. Favorable conditions for the development of A. vexans larvae in water bodies, leading to the emergence of females with follicles at I-II and II phases and fatty body in the III and IV stages, were conducive to high actual fertility of newborn females in the 1st oviposition.
