An application of the removal method to the population estimation of Culex fatigans resting indoors

The removal method was applied as a technique for population estimation of C. fatigans resting indoors in an urban area. Mosquitoes were captured by successive time unit collections using both sweep net and aspirator collecting techniques. The efficiency of removal of mosquitoes from the population by 2 men with sweep nets was compared to that of 4 men collecting with aspirator tubes. The former method provided sufficient population change to obtain acceptable population estimates, the latter required more man power to obtain an equivalent precision in the estimate. The removal method by sweep net was useful in estimation of the mosquito populations resting indoors, particularly when densities are great. The precision of the estimate was limited.
