Persistence of anthelmintic activity after administration of oxfendazole and levamisole hydrochloride to lambs

Worm-free lambs were treated with oxfendazole (4.5 to 5.0 mg/kg body-weight), levamisole hydrochloride (7.5 mg/kg) or not treated and immediately set to graze for up to 48 h nematode-infested pasture (a few from each group were instead housed in clean yards). Faecal egg counts 24 days after the start of grazing showed that during the first 24 h after treatment the lambs given oxfendazole acquired very few worms (< 5 epg). Untreated lambs acquired egg counts of 100 epg after having grazed for 16 h and one of 3 levamisole-treated lambs had 100 epg after having grazed for only 4 h. Evidently, after treatment with oxfendazole sheep can safely be turned back to infested pasture overnight and moved to clean pasture on the morrow.
