Anthelmintic activity of morantel tartrate in calves

In Georgia, USA, calves naturally infected with gastro-intestinal helminths were given morantel tartrate at 10.5 to 11.5 mg/kg body-weight in the form of a bolus and at 10 mg/kg in the form of crumbles given on top of the feed. The bolus and the crumbles gave 100% efficacy against adult Haemonchus placei, Cooperia punctata, C. pectinata, C. oncophora and Trichostrongylus colubriformis. The bolus gave 89 and 99% efficacy, respectively, against adult Ostertagia ostertagi and T. axei and the crumbles gave 95 and 99% efficacy, respectively. Efficacy against immature worms was erratic. No signs of toxicity were observed.
