Calves were artificially infected at 6 weeks of age with 7 species of gastro-intestinal nematodes and, 35 days later, were treated orally with avermectin B1a at 50, 100 or 200 mu g/kg body-weight or were left untreated. At postmortem examination 7 days after treatment the 3 doses were found to have produced over-all reductions in worm numbers of 98.6, 98.7 and 98.4%, respectively. These reductions were highly significant for Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostrongylus axei, T. colubriformis, Cooperia oncophora, C. punctata and Oesophagostomum radiatum. No signs of adverse reactions to the drug were observed.
