High concentrations of lysozyme were found in gastrointestinal mucosa extracts from 18 healthy and 25 diarrhoeic calves (2-18 days old). Lysozyme concentrations were higher in abomasum than in intestinal extracts, but there was no difference between the different parts of the intestine. Lysozyme concentration decreased with age, but the decrease was significant only in the abomasum and distal jejunum. There was no difference in lysozyme concentration between healthy and diarrhoeic calves.
