The xylose loading test was applied to 29 healthy calves and 23 calves with diarrhoea. The malabsorption of diarrhoea was manifested by an initial 30-50% drop in xylose uptake. However, 8 h after xylose administration there was little difference between the two groups. It was concluded that oral administration of suitable fluids was a rational therapy for diarrhoea.
