Eighteen quaternary salts of the general formula - N-CH2-CH2-O-R, where the nitrogen is part of the heterocyclic ring system, had little or no activity against experimental infections of Nematospiroides dubius, Nippostrongylus muris and Heterakis spumosa in mice. Only 4-methoxyphenoxyethylisoquinolinium p-toluenesulphonate and 2-naphthoxyethylquinolinium p-toluenesulphonate had any effect and this was against H. spumosa only, oral doses of 1,000 mg/kg body-weight for 3 days, giving over 90 % reduction of infection. 3 benzothiazole substituted bephenium compounds with -CH2-N (CH3)2-CH2-CH2-O-R as part of their structure were also inactive.
