Amoebic lung abscess

The case is described of a 30 year old Hindu who had suffered from fever, cough and right sided pain since July 1975. This was diagnosed as tuberculous pleural effusion, or hydatid cyst. On 22.1.76 an exploratory thoracotomy showed an encapsulated abscess in the lower right side of the thorax extending down to the liver and containing pus like a liver abscess, but no amoebae were found. He was treated with metronidazole 400 mg 3 times a day for 10 days and he made a complete recovery.
