Thirty patients with significant elevation of the right dome of the diaphragm in postero-anterior radiographs were studied; 21 of them showed a reduction in elevation to normal limits after evacuation of pus from an amoebic liver abscess. In one of the patients with elevation of the diaphragm, pus was obtained 18 months after therapeutic aspiration of a liver abscess, suggesting that at least some of the cases may have had silent abscesses, sometimes of appreciable size. The persistence of elevation after evacuation was not always associated with downward hepatomegaly or with hepatic tenderness.
