Control of atrophic rhinitis with a Bordetella bronchiseptica bacterin

A group of 200 piglets farrowed from sows vaccinated with a commercial bacterin at 4 and 2 weeks before farrowing and were vaccinated at 7 and 28 days old showed less than 1% incidence of clinical rhinitis and reached 220 lb weight in 170 days. 138 untreated piglets on the same farm showed an incidence of more than 20% and required 194.5 days to reach 220 lb. On another farm 140 piglets treated as above showed a 7% incidence of rhinitis from birth to 25-40 lb weight and a 7% market loss as feeder pigs. 150 unvaccinated piglets showed a 65% incidence and a 47% market loss during the same period. No adverse reactions to the vaccine were observed.
