The following mouse strains were examined for their suitability for the lienotox test, as a contribution to virulence testing of B. bronchiseptica: A/Bln, A/Bln, BALB/c, Han, CBA/Bln, C3H/Bln, DBA/Bln, XVII/B1n, and Frid:NMRI. The following criteria were used: mortality, behaviour of relative spleen mass, and incidence of splenic atrophy. The lienotox tests were conducted using eight different B. bronchiseptica strains. Subcutaneous lienotox tests (with 21 days of observation) were more favourable than acute tests under the given experimental conditions. For statistical evaluation, chi superscript 2-tests were superior to comparison between mean values of relative spleen mass. The suitability of mouse strains is probably associated with the major histocompatibility complex (H-2). The outbred stock NMRI (H-2 haplotype H-2q) was suitable without any limitation. Pigmentation genes and allozyme loci were of no importance to reactivity to B. bronchiseptica toxin.
