Pneumonia in a sow due to Streptococcus suis type II and Bordetella bronchiseptica

Two wild boar sows died on a farm where there were 16 adult of the same breed and 50 young stock. PM examination of one of the sows, which was in poor condition, revealed a large amount of froth in the trachea and bronchi, enlarged mediastinal and bronchial lymph nodes, epicardial oedema, consolidation of much of the lungs with some pleurisy over the caudal lobes and an enlarged spleen. The sow had come from a zoo 6 months earlier and was housed in a group of 6 in outside runs. S. suis type II and B. bronchiseptica were isolated from samples of lungs. Histological examination revealed changes consistent with bacterial pneumonia including severe necrotizing alveolitis with serofibrinous exudation and infiltration with neutrophils and macrophages. The immune-peroxidase test for S. suis type II showed that the bacterium was present in the alveoli. There was a history of S. suis type II meningitis in sows on the farm but not in sows at the zoo suggesting that S. suis type II may be significant when animals are moved from a herd with no history of the organism to one where the infection is endemic.
