Of nine 5-week-old pigs tonsil-swabbed and inoculated orally with S. suis type 2 culture, one was a detectable tonsillar carrier 24 hours later. Of nine 5-week-old pigs kept in contact with clinically infected pigs for 24 hours, then killed, none yielded S. suis from tonsils. When S. suis was suspended in distilled water at 60 degrees C (scald water temperature), 95-99.98% of organisms were inactivated in the first 30 seconds.
