In a breeding herd of 900 sows, in which a severe form of atrophic rhinitis had occurred for several years, the sows were vaccinated twice with a monovalent Bordetella bronchiseptica vaccine, the first time 4 weeks, the second 2 weeks before farrowing. Piglets were vaccinated twice, at 7 and 28 days of age. The animals vaccinated were 3 groups of farrowings (130 sows and about 1200 piglets), separated by 3 other groups of similar size to act as unvaccinated controls. Nasal swabs taken at random from piglets 5 or 6 weeks old were examined bacteriologically. After slaughter, sections of the snout were used to determine the frequency and severity of atrophy of the conchae. The vaccine was well tolerated. Only 13.5% of vaccinated piglets were found to be Bordetella carriers, compared with 95.7% of the non-vaccinated control animals. Frequency of atrophy of the conchae was equal in both groups, but among the vaccinated pigs there were four times fewer severe changes, yet twice as many slight changes, as in the control animals.
