Sprague-Dawley rats of bodyweight 60 to 65 were given for 3 months a semisynthetic diet with the fat provided by coconut oil (control), groundnut oil, safflower oil or sesame oil. Glycoprotein and hexose concentration of tissues was estimated at the end of feeding. In the liver the concentration of hexose was higher with groundnut, safflower and sesame oils than with coconut oil; it was highest with sesame. Concentration of fucose was not significantly changed with safflower but increased with groundnut and sesame oils; sialic acid concentration increased with safflower, groundnut and sesame oils. In the kidney, hexose increased with safflower and sesame but did not obviously change with groundnut. Fucose and sialic acid rose in all 3 groups compared to the control. In the heart hexose rose with safflower and sesame but did not change with groundnut oil compared to coconut oil. Fucose concentration fell with groundnut oil but rose with safflower and sesame. Sialic acid concentration fell in the 3 groups below that with coconut oil.
