Effect of serpasil administration on changes in the metabolism of glycoproteins in hypercholesterolemic rats

The levels of protein bound hexose, protein bound fucose and sialic acid in serum, and total hexose, fucose and sialic acid in heart, aorta, liver and kidney were variably altered in the hypercholesterolemic rats. Serpasil was found to counteract these changes, the effect being of variable significance. There was also a significant increase in the activities of enzymes involved in the degradation of glycoproteins, .beta.-glucuronidase, .beta.-glucosaminidase, .beta.-galactosidase and cathepsin-D in the serum and tissues of hypercholesterolemic rats and this was reversed by serpasil administration.
