The effect of ethanol treatment at 2 levels for 3 mo. (0.45 ml and 1.35 ml, respectively, per rat per day) on the metabolim of glycosaminoglycans (gg) in the heart of rats with isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction was studied. Percentage mortality was lower in ethanol-treated rats as compared to untreated rats. Pretreatment with ethanol followed by administration of isoproterenol affected the concentration of most gg fractions in the heart at period of peak infarction, the effect being generally opposite to that produced by isoproterenol alone. During stages of recovery, particularly after 15.5 days, pretreatment with ethanol restored many gg fractions to their normal levels. Ethanol treatment at the higher level led to a decrease in the concentration of gg in the aorta of rats at peak period also as compared to isoproterenol-treated controls. During recovery ethanol treatment, particularly at higher levels, produced lower levels of gg. Ethanol administration also produced changes in the activity of degrading enzymes in isoproterenol-treated rats.
