Male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 80 g were given a stock diet or a diet with 20% fat and 2% cholesterol without or with potassium chlorate 25 mg/100 g bodyweight added. After 5 months the rats were killed. Protein-bound hexose and protein-bound hexosamine increased in serum and protein-bound fucose decreased, but protein-bound sialic acid showed no change. Total hexose, hexosamine, fucose and neutral sugars other than fucose increased in aorta and cartilage but sialic acid decreased. Collagen and elastin in skin and cartilage decreased.
