The experiment was carried out in 65 male Wistar rats, divided into three groups. Group I, a control one, received standard food everyday. Group II was put on a diet containing 40% of animal fat and 3% of cholesterol and 0.3% of methylthiouracyl. Ultrastructural studies of the myocardium showed an increase in the number of mitochondria, their damage, as well as an appearance of cholesterol clefts and glycogen cysts. Progressive changes, detectable in the ultrastructural studies, showed proliferation of the connective tissue rich in collagen fibers on the perivascular areas and between muscular fibers.
