Effect of essential phospholipids on the lipid content in the liver and myocardium of rats fed a high-fat diet

The prophylactic and therapeutic influence on atherosclerosis of essential phospholipids (EPL) on the neutral lipids in the liver and heart muscle of rats fed a high-fat diet was investigated histochemically. After 2800 mg/kg of EPL administered with the high-fat diet, a reduction in the neutral lipid content in hepatocytes and their absence from heart muscle fibers were observed. Therapeutic application of EPL caused a decrease in the number of lipid droplets in hepatocytes roughly inversely proportional to the EPL dose, that of 2800 mg/kg producing an approximately normal state.
