Male Sprague-Dawley rats were given a diet containing 33% egg yolk solids to appetite for 3 months; groups had that diet with 25 or 50 USP units bovine parathyroid extract (PTE) every other day or with the solvent. Hydroxyproline in urine increased in PTE-treated rats. The PTE treatment significantly reduced the weight of a given area of aorta and reduced total hydroxyproline content of aorta; it also caused a significant rise in liver collagenase activity.
