Human platelet factor 4 (PF 4) disappearance in rabbits fed an atherogenic diet

A group of rabbits (A) fed on a diet supplemented with 1% cholesterol for 2 months rapidly developed marked hypercholesterolaemia and hypertriglyceridaemia; the rabbits were then fed on a normal diet for 1 month. A control group of rabbits (B) was fed on a normal diet. Group A rabbits had severe lipid infiltration spread all over the aorta and fatty liver. Heparin given 30 min after human platelet factor 4 (PF 4) induced an increase in circulating PF 4 from less than 10 to 156 +or- 7 ng/ml in group B rabbits; in group A rabbits the peak concentration of PF 4 after heparin was 101 +or- 11 ng/ml.
